Background

For PMI PMPs, 60 PDUs of Continuing Certification Requirements during each three year renewal period is required to maintain the certification. The PDUs are earned in five categories:

• Category 1 Formal Education
• Category 2 Professional Activities and Self-Directed Learning
• Category 3 Education Program offered by PMI Registered Education Providers or PMI Companies
• Category 4 Education Program offered by Other Providers
• Category 5 Volunteer Services

PMI On-Line Certification Registry

As PDUs are earned, they are entered into the PMI On-Line Certification Registry during the three year recertification cycle:

For Category 3, each class has a registered PMI number and a given /listed number of PDUs – it is rather easy to complete the on-line form and much of the information is already in the system, so you do not need to repeat it

For Category 4, the PMP needs to add in the on-line form the common information plus answer a few more questions (than for Category 3) and have documentation in your files (every PDU requires documentation that the PMP retains in a file for possible audit). Category 4 classes are converted to PDUs by the formula 1 Class Hour = 1 PDU. Other than that, it is the same process between Category 3 and Category 4 – they count the same.
